Blaenant Colliery

This model was a recent commission from a gentleman in Fife. It is from a 'Wrightlines' brass kit. I would not say this kit is for a novice as there is a lot of awkward soldering and brass bending to be done. However I greatly enjoyed making this model. I think a coalmine is a highly interesting prototype as virtually every colliery headgear had subtle differences. This model is based on Blaenant colliery in South Wales. Alas this mine like many in the valleys is no longer working due to the cruel closures of deep mines since the 1980's.

I have listed some websites that might interest those with a passion for collieries.

Some of my research for this project was on the web, you may visit these sites below

  • - A German site looking specifically at South wales Collieries. In English and German.
  • This website is an excellent resource for those interested in all aspects of Scottish mining
  • A school site from Scotland, still - interesting to look at!
